Extramarital affairs in Bollywood films

Extramarital affairs in Bollywood films
‘In a restless heart the seed of betrayal lay...’ goes a line in a song by Bruce Springsteen. Very true, when it comes to unfaithful partners, hubbies or wives, who are often the subject of films in Bollywood. Infidelity has often sparked the imagination of our filmmakers right from the black-and-white era to the present day. A love triangle gets its most exciting twist when any of thespouses, if not both, transgress the bounds of fidelity, and end up having an extramaritalaffair, often with disastrous results.

In Yash Chopra’s masterpiece Silsila, Amitabh Bachchan left his wife to elope with his lover. In Murder, Mallika Sherawat couldn’t resist the temptation of jumping into bed with another man. Bipasha Basu sidelined her over-aged hubby and fell for a young John Abraham in Jism. The latest Bollywood flick Mr. Singh Mrs. Mehta seems nothing short of an ode to spouse swapping.
Come, take a trip through the torrid adulterous affairs we’ve seen in Bollywood films.

1. Thank You
The latest release on extra marital affairs is the comedy Thank You, a funny take on extra-marital affairs. The film stars Akshay and Raj (Bobby), Yogi (Suniel) and Vikram (Irrfan).

2. Masti
Was a formula that is still working. Three guys - married; three bimbo wives and the introduction of a hot babe.

3. No Entry
Followed the Masti formula. Not sure which came first though!

4. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna

The movie told the story of this affair and its repercussions on their respective partners (Preity Zinta, Abhishek Bachchan).

5. Murder
Remember Emraan Hashmi and Mallika's record breaking liplocks in the film? Just reminding you that Mallika was married to Ashmit Patel in the film..

6. Jism
Bipasha Basu is ready to indulge in some hot lovemaking with John Abraham in Jism.

7. Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya
Urmila Matondkar played the obsessed girl who tried and failed at luring happily married Fardeen Khan from breaking out of blissful matrimony.

8. Arth
Mahesh Bhatt's wonderful movie Arth (left), was wonderfully honest and left an impact on viewers. The cheating husband, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, loves wife Shabana Azmi but leaves her for the obsessed star, Smita Patil.

9. Pati, Patni Aur Woh
Sanjeev Kumar was the deceiving husband but he was such a sweet, funny guy in the film that you almost forgave him.

10. Silsila
A twist of fate makes Amitabh Bachchan marry Jaya Bachchan in Yash Chopra’s ‘Silsila’. But he’s not able to cast his lover (Rekha) out of his mind. Eventually, Amitabh and Rekha elope chasing that elusive happiness that keeps slipping away.
11. Zeher
In Mohit Suri’s film Zeher, a cop (Emraan Hashmi) grapples with the pangs of a breaking marriage (with Shamita Shetty). He meets a married woman (Udita Goswami) and has a torrid affair with her.

12. Mr. Singh Mrs. Mehta
Aruna Shields, plays an agony aunt columnist who finds out about her husband’s extramarital affair with another woman. When she and that other woman’s husband (Prashant Narayanan) meet, sparks fly. Mr. Singh Mrs. Mehta is a bona fide film on cheating spouses.

13. Life In a Metro
Shilpa Shetty played a woman locked in a loveless marriage with a husband who beds his mistress (Kangana Ranaut) with promises of job promotion. Shilpa falls for a theatre actor (Shiney Ahuja) and almost goes to the extent of sleeping with him.

14. Shabd
Would a husband prompt his wife to have an affair with another man? Well, Sanjay Dutt certainly did that in Leena Yadav’s box office turkey Shabd. In the film, Dutt plays a writer who asks his wife Aishwarya Rai to have a romantic affair with Zayed Khan just to have a sensational story for his next book.

15. Biwi No. 1
In this laugh riot by David Dhawan, Salman Khan plays a married man with 2 kids. But he’s attracted to an aspiring model (Sushmita Sen) and moves in with her, leaving behind his dowdy wife (Karisma Kapoor). That’s when the wife decides to take matters into her own hand.
